Interview // Kelly Travalia of Free People

V2V Graphics

We sure love Free People at V2V.  We’re also quite fond of our Chicago based rep, Kelly Travalia.  She is the quintessential Free People girl, but as she’ll tell you, that can really be many types of women!  She is creative, approachable, stylish, and fun, not to mention, absolutely stunning with her long, strawberry blonde hair.  Kelly and her new wife, Emily, just got married at the coolest venue, and she sent us some beautiful photos of their day.  Enjoy!

How did you first step into the world of Free People?  What were you doing before?

I started at FP as a part time sales associate in our Bucktown store (had yet to open at the time). I was in college at the Art Institute at the time and a classmate told me the brand I loved (FP of course) was opening a store and was hosting interviews that day.  I printed my resume in class and ran over to the Apparel Center where I got an interview… and the job!

What makes you identify with the brand?

The main reason I identify with the brand is the versatility. You can be whomever you want in FP – and for me that changes daily based on mood and my activity for the day.

How long have you been a rep for Free People?

I worked in the Bucktown store for one year (July 07 – July 08), then I made the switch to wholesale and I am still here J

What does a typical day of work involve for you?

My day to day is constantly changing… Some days we are working at tradeshows while others are spent at my desk reviewing selling and making sure my accounts are happy!

What is the hardest part of your job?

The hardest part of my job is the weather! I know this sounds silly, but when you pre-book for a season you don’t know what the weather is going to send your way. If your floor is filled with sweaters and we have record warm temperatures, we have to reevaluate the product assortment so that the retailer remains lucrative. This is hard because it is ever-changing and out of our control!

What are some of the perks?

I get to work for a company that I am proud of – the product, the people, the image, they are all huge perks!!

What are some of your favorite Free People pieces available at V2V?

I am currently obsessed with the Vegan Leather Moto Jacket in Green – it is the perfect update to the classic moto!

We know you recently got married.  Congratulations!  Did your wedding have any Free People influence?

Thank you J I have been at the company for so long, that most of my life has FP influences in it some way or another. We were married in a burned down factory that is now preserved as a museum, so our whole vibe was very much a mix of new and old, north woods and bling – a combination of us!

What song did you choose for your first dance?

We tried to keep the music fun for the whole event… we all walked down the aisle to UB40’s Falling in Love with you, we then exited to Bruno Mars’ Treasure.  After some socializing we introduced the wedding party to Earth, Wind and Fire’s September... and finally our first dance was to Sam Smith’s Stay with Me.

Do you have any advice for those planning weddings now?

Keep a wedding notebook! I bought a super cute journal from Anthropologie and filled it with everything from business cards and inspiration photos to notes and to do lists! Now that the wedding has passed, it is still fun to take a peek at! My other advice would be to remember the wedding is for the two of you – don’t plan for your guests, plan it for your selves and your guests, who are there because they love you, and they will have an amazing time!

Around Town // Farmers Market

As an Ann Arbor-dwelling Michigander for a little over three years now, I am a loyal and frequent visitor to the Ann Arbor Farmers Market.  It’s one of the best ones I’ve ever been to, not to mention it’s right outside of our Kerrytown V2V location.  This market has it all: a variety of herbs and plants, food carts, and plenty of produce.  It’s an easy one stop shopping experience on anyWednesday or Saturday, and there are usually great musicians playing, as well.  I highly recommend stopping by if you haven’t yet, and of course, don’t forget to come into V2V afterwards!  We open at 9am on market days! (Dress and Denim Jacket by Free People, Tote by Joy Susan, and Wrap Bracelet by Fashion Bella)

Phoebe’s one of the V2V Kerrytown ladies, and along with reading everything she can get her hands on, running, and her hilarious family, she loves her some little cocktail dresses.  She looks great in all of them, but today she’s wearing this sleeveless printed number by Thml along with the BB Dakota Foster Jacket and some earrings by Chanour.  Lookin’ good, Phoebs!

9.19 // Look of the Week

As we move into the last weekend of summer, I find that I am growing more and more comfortable with the arrival of fall.  Those who know me well know that when the weather drops below 70 degrees, I normally get angry, like actually mad.  I’ve never liked the cold, but something about this year has me feeling really hopeful.  I’m excited for apple picking, trying my hand at hosting Thanksgiving for the first time, and the clothes.  I do love the clothes.

While it’s so nice to be able to just throw on a little sundress and sandals and grab my bag and be out the door, my fall wardrobe offers so much more variety.  The sweater, jeans, and boot combinations are endless, not to mention all of the great textures of cardigans, socks, and tights to autumnize the aforementioned sundresses.  Today, I got into the fall spirit with this cozy sweater, boyfriend jeans, and ankle boots by Free People.  The high-heeled boots dress up the distressed denim a bit.  I also chose a simple white long sleeve tee by Splendid, a hat by Grace Hats, and my acorn necklace to complete my outfit.  Bring it on fall.  I’m so ready for you.  (Although I am kind of over pumpkin spice everything.  Is that awful?  Please don’t hate me.)

Interview // With One of Our Own

V2V Graphics

Happy September!  We here at V2V are celebrating the new month with this inspirational spread in Pastorale Magazine.  The shoot was a collaborative effort by an amazing team that included Erin Marie Miller (photographer), Madalyn Knebel (model), Jerad Rushlows of Daybreak Salon & Spa (hair), Melissa Helton (makeup), and freelance stylist, Emily Haight, who also happens to manage our Kerrytown location.  Emily created these fall 2014 looks with pieces from both Ann Arbor V2V locations, and several of these styles are also available online.  Check out Pastorale’s September issue for all the fall outfit inspiration you’ll need, and here’s a little interview with our very own Emily.

How would you sum up your personal style?
My sense of style is definitely influenced by vintage looks from the sixties and seventies.  My mother was a hippie, and I’ve never quite forgiven her for not hanging onto every piece of clothing she owned from when she was in high school/college.  Free People (one of my favorite V2V brands) offers a wide variety of pieces that come pretty close to my mom’s wardrobe of the past, so that keeps me happy!

From where do you draw inspiration?
Along with my mother, I’m inspired by many women of the past, most of them musicians.  Stevie Nicks, Françoise Hardy, and Yoko Ono are some of my favorites, and I know he’s not a woman, but I can’t NOT mention David Bowie when it comes to style inspiration.

How long have you worked with V2V?
I’ve been at V2V for almost a year now.  I know it sounds really cliché, but time really does fly when you’re having fun!  Part of me can’t believe it’s been nearly a year, and the other half of me just feels so comfortable with everyone I get to work with that it feels like I’ve been here forever.

What drew you to V2V in the first place?
I love that it is a locally owned business.  As the store manager and also the assistant to the owner, I get to play a large role in the direction and development of the store, and I know my opinion really matters.  I’ve worked for big retail corporations before, and while they can be great places to work with some fantastic people, sometimes I couldn’t help but feel like a nameless, faceless, cog in the machine.

Are the looks that you create on others also styles that you would wear yourself?
Yes and no.  I know what I like, and I would never attach my name to something that I didn’t feel evoked my aesthetic, but part of the fun of dressing up other people for a living is being able to experiment and do something with clothing apart from just dressing myself every day.  A lot of the work I’ve done is definitely my “look”, but I’ve also done some things outside of my comfort zone that have been a blast!  I recently worked with Erin (who photographed the Pastorale shoot) on an old Hollywood photo shoot.  The 40’s and 50’s were never my preferred era, but I really loved working with that more structured look that was feminine in a whole new way for me.  It may inspire my personal style to evolve a bit.  Styling men is also really fun for me since those pieces aren’t ones I normally get to work with.  That said, I LOVE seeing women in men’s clothing or clothing that is inspired by menswear.

What are your favorite pieces available at V2V right now?
It would have to be a three-way tie between The Hooded Vegan Moto Jacket by Free People, The Free People Boyfriend Jeans, and The Birdy Cable Knit Sweater by Lauren Vidal.

What is your fantasy styling gig?
I’ve styled a few bands before, but my dream job would be to dress impossibly cool women like Haim or Lorde for a shoot.

What is your favorite thing about fall?
Brand new leather jackets and boots!  (And Halloween of course)

Fall in Love // Four Ways to do Fall

V2V Graphics

Whether you like it or not, Fall truly is coming, but there’s no need to hibernate yet with so many cute new ways to style yourself and get out there to show it off!  With pretty patterns, cozy cover-ups, earth tones, and just a little bling, this can be your best fall yet.  Here are four looks that we think will really make you embrace the new season!

1.     Earthy Ethereal - My favorite things about fall fashion are great leather pieces and earth tones and Sima is wearing both in this Earthy Ethereal outfit. The Tortuga Ankle Boots are a perfect fall boot and looks great with dresses and paints.  Burnt oranges, dusty blues, creamy mochas, and harvest golds are filling up my closet right now, and the rich colors are making me even happier than the brights of summer.  Sima is wearing some of these here, and the flowy Sunset Park Thermal and fluffy September Song Sweater by Free People lighten up the richness of her fall getup.

2.     Cozy Comfort - The Free People Cloudy Day Cardigan has become a staff favorite at V2V.  This oversized sweater is super comfortable and easy to throw over anything. It looks great with some denim shorts and a tank during this transitional weather, and when it starts to get chillier, you can wear it with boyfriend jeans (like the Catherine Boyfriend Jeans), a thermal (like the Catch up with Me Top) and a button down flannel (like the Alpine Cuff Thermal), just like Sima did today.  Complete the look with some ankle booties (like the The Tortuga Ankle Boots) and statement jewelry to give your laid back outfit a touch of femininity.

3.     Bohemian Bling - This.  Necklace.  Is.  Everything.  I am a firm believer that every woman can wear a statement necklace.  There are those out there that think it’s too much, but a big, beautiful piece like this added to a tomboy look captures that free spirit style perfectly.  Sima is wearing the Pewter Neck Piece with the LA Roller Crop Jean, the Juliet Cuff Top, and the Catch Up with Me Top)  and these Fisher Boots by DV Dolce Vita, and she absolutely nailed it.

4.     Pattern Pretty - Gotta love a great pattern, and with this dress by Free People, Sima is rocking an interesting outfit with just a few simple pieces.  Try this Sundown Babydoll Dress with Free People’s Hooded Vegan Leather Moto Jacket (pictured here) or engage in some pattern mixing with The Jacquard Vegan Moto Jacket instead.  Add a few accessories and a knee-high leather boot, and you’re good to go!

Summer Hair // 3 Ways to Beat the Heat

V2V Graphics

Looking for some new casual updos or just different ways to pull your hair back in the summer heat? If you're tired of just a simple ponytail, here are some cute ways to accessorize your hair that will add a little something extra to your summer outfit.

1) A fun headband, like the bow and leopard headbands Rachel is wearing, gives a pop of color to a simple tank and jean outfit. Add a red lip and you are ready for your day.

2) A back fishtail braid with the nude bow clip is a great way to pull your hair back while still looking stylish. And don't worry if the braid isn't perfect, having it loose and messy, like Rachel is wearing it, will actually give you that effortless summer look. For added texture, curl your ends and comb through with fingers before making the braid.

3) A side braid with the gold bow clip is a more casual do and is great for those days you are in rush and need a simple fix for your hair. To do the hair style simply part your hair and do a side braid then finish it off with The Gold Bow Clip.

Featured Brand // Hobo for Fall

V2V Graphics

V2V has been a Hobo retailer for many years now, and we are so excited about their new fall collection!  This season’s bags are perfect for all ages and occasions.  There are cute little clutches for all those weddings you’re going to, great satchel’s for every day, and big crossbody bags with lots of compartments that can double as diaper bags for the most stylish moms.  Leah looks so cool and ready for her day with the Quinn Handbag, Lorna Crossbody, Sheila Tote, and the Darcy Clutch. Stop in at a V2V location, or shop our site to get your own!

Current Clothing Crush // The Bad Romance Sweater

V2V Graphics

We’re so excited about this sweater by Free People.  It’s the perfect piece to layer over a basic tank or one of the Free People Racerback Crop Bras available in V2V stores.  The crochet detailing is so beautiful and romantic.  Throw this on to feel pretty and girly without having to spend hours stressing about what to wear.  Wear it to the beach over your suit and some denim cutoffs or on a midsummer date night with skinny jeans and wedges like Emily’s outfit here.  Happy summer styling!

Current Magazine // 2014 Reader’s choice party

V2V Graphics

The ladies of V2V Kerrytown attended Current Magazine’s annual party where V2V was named the best locally owned women’s boutique in the county!  What a great way to kick off the summer!  Come visit us for some great summer styles including the Velvet, Weston Wear, Susana Monaco, and Free People looks featured on our staff here!
